A beautiful nature reserve with wonderful forest and small rivers. Here they made it possible to trek trough nature, reaching camping spots that are only available to hikers. How it works? Hidden throughout the park, there are 17 natural campsites. These consist of a wooden platform to pitch your tent on and a composting toilet closeby. Sites have to be booked to get access to the specific coordinates you’ll have to navigate to. Each site has space for two tents, but it is possible to book the whole site just for yourself. The answer came in the Scandinavian summer. Since it doesn’t get completely dark in the summer months in Norway, you have many more options and time for travelling. We set ourselves up on a camping close to the starting point: Preikestolen Camping AS. Not the prettiest or natural campsite, but one with plenty of toilets and showers. It is clearly used for the same purpose we had: sleeping before heading up the rock. We went to bed early, earplugs and sleep mask at the ready. The alarm was set for 03.00u in the morning. As quietly as we could we broke down camp, had some coffee and drove off towards the parking. Arriving at the parking lot before 4 o’clock in the morning paid of. It was still dark, and there were about 20 cars parked in total. We quickly added ours and took off hiking. Our goals was to arrive at Preikestolen before 05.20u, when the sun would officialy rise. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65c921a2237da245c13cb50a/895485f1-91c5-4396-9a24-51b19bfcc8c3/preikestolen+3.jpeg Stories - A quiet Preikestolen view - About the hike The hike up to Preikestolen will seem easy if you are an experienced hiker. It is an 8km round-trip, taking the same route up and down. In total you gain about 450m in elevation. The route is well marked and very nice to walk. It runs through a bit of forest and rock plateaus. Uniquely for Norway they added some rope rails at a few points for safety and to help you along. We hiked it partly in the dark with our headlamps on. In total the way up took us a little more than 1 hour and we met only a handful of other people on the trail. Going down, the trail was a lot busier meaning it also took us about an hour to get back to the car. About that view Getting up there might be a little demanding, especially in the dark, but it’s more than worth it. Just look at those views! We arrived just in time for the sunrise and spend a good 2 hours at the top, just taking it all in. We even brought our little camp stove and took the time to make some warm oatmeal and enjoyed our breakfast with an amazing view. Just like us, most of the people there this early were quiet and wanted to enjoy the view. Everyone got plenty of time to take their own pictures and stand as close to the edge as they dared. As mentioned before, going back down was so much busier than getting up. In our opinion this really means you enjoy the route less. Our recommendation is therefore to take the time to plan, and ensure that at least on half of the route is done at a quieter moment of day. Also note that it is not allowed to camp up on the Preikestolen itself, there are no toilets on the route (but they are present at the parking lot), and you should never leave any trace behind. We have used it both for short 1 or 2 nighters and longer weeks away. It really feels like a house when it’s standing, and using it in the mountains and storm is no issue for it. This makes it a very versatile piece of kit: it is water and stormproof for in the colder and wetter months, while being breathable enough for hot summer days. Using it with 2 people is the sweet spot: there is room for a third if you need but it will become cramped quick with another sleeping spot. The little nooks on both sides of the tent are also great for storing your cooking equipment or food. The guy lines coming from the front of the tent and the awning are often used to hang clothing or a tea towel that need to dry. We find that while we do have to bend down a bit to enter the tent, it is still great that you can stand up to get changed and it doesn’t bother us. The one downside we have found is that the entrance zipper is placed directly behind the pole. This makes it harder to open and close and lead to some scratching on the pole at the backside. This can be fixed by placing the foot of the pole a little bit more forward, creating some space for opening and closing the tent. When setting up, once you have the pole in the tent, one person can focus on setting the guy-lines while the other can already start putting gear inside. This makes it a very fast and efficient proces. It does work best on softer ground for a quick setup. While we originally bought them for a fastpack along the Rheinsteig in April, we did not end up doing this trip due to an injury. Therefore, we have thus far only used it on longer day outings. We still think it is a great pack for when you are trekking from hotel to hotel or to huts. You can bring a lot of gear and carry it comfortably. Our current plan is to use this pack as both a day-hike backpack on holidays, and to use it for fast-packing in the future. Because it is waterproof and fits nicely, it is a very versatile pack. Also, the colors it comes in are great and match with anything. While not a pack for shorter distances or your daily runs, we think Rab did a really good job with the Veil. There are not a lot of packs on the market currently that have this sweet spot of 20 Liters. We think it is the ideal size for a fast-packing kit if you also want to carry camera gear. If you pack even more ultralight you could probably get away with only 15 liters, but we enjoy having a bit of extra space for things like lunch etc. The waist band keeps it very stable and comfortable when running which is great when it is a bit heavier. It it a great pack for those runs where you want to bring water, some food and bare necessities. It fits very comfortably and looks good! The quality also holds up great, and the fact that the back pocket is water resistant makes it very suitable for unpredictable weather in fall and winter. No matter if it is full or empty, it always fits well which makes it very versatile. However, if you want to bring more layers or extra food this pack might be too small for you. The trekking pole storage can also be a limiting factor if you like to grab and store these on the go. Organizing on the other hand is very easy with this pack. The different pockets mean you can give everything it’s own spot and always be able to find it. There is no visible wear on them thus far, and the only upkeep the need is some leather balsam every now and again. Because these are barefoot style, you can directly feel the terrain you are navigating. When the shoe might start to slip, this is easy to notice and correct. The chance of rolling an ankle is also much lower for me, since I can move my foot more freely. Your feet do get tired a bit faster in these shoes compared to ‘ regular’ non-barefoot hiking boots, but that is to be expected and goes away with a lot of use. We used these boots in the mountains of Switzerland and Italy, trekked trough boggy terrain in Norway and Sweden and walked our the wet Netherlands a lot. They kept us steady and our feet dry through all of this. The rubber patches work great on rocky terrain, and the grooves in the soles make sure you maintain grip in the mud.
